My college roommate, JW, will be arriving next week for a holiday visit. It's been at least a dozen years since we've seen each other which seems like a miscalculation. Our friendship was solidified when we pledged the same sorority freshman year, and our big sisters were best friends. Our senior year we lived together, and our experiences, like our wardrobe, merged into one. Post college, we moved to separate cities, NY and Philadelphia, but often hopped on the train to visit the other. Summer holidays we often spent at JW's family beach house in Avalon. By the time I was living in Los Angeles, JW was in Vermont, and our visits were more infrequent. The phone calls slipped to once or twice a year, with lots of missed messages in between due to hectic schedules and time change. Facebook reconnected us, put us into daily contact, and created a base of familiarity for when we finally did converse to wish the other a happy birthday. About a month ago JW suggested a Christmas visit, and I could not be more excited to see her smile again.
