Ringing in Thirteen

Slammed into Christmas this year and got knocked on my ass.
Worked until late on Friday before the holiday.
Traveled back to LA on Saturday to sit in
a frigid theater to see Hamilton.
Unpacked for days.
A dry hacking couch lodged in my lungs and took me down.
Had to cancel my New Year's Eve party
but still celebrated someone's thirteenth birthday.

Met Life

NYC in December is a like a sugar plum fairy's fantasy.
Wreaths and holiday lights brighten every crack and crevice.
Pine trees dusted with fresh snow stand guard at corner markets.
It's picture perfect, and feels like a warm holiday embrace in front of a roaring fire.
And yet I'm counting the days until I return to the warm Santa Ana winds
kicking up dust and ash in Southern California.
Hollywood offices shuttered on Friday for a two week pause,
but our production is still going full steam ahead for another week.
I will slam into Christmas,
and then carve out time for
a low winter sun hike reflecting on what was and what will be.
Until then I'm packing as much of NYC culture and cheer into my weekend as possible.

Cucidati

A Sicilian tradition lives on.
Was able to join my mother and cousins for an annual Christmas favorite;
baking Cucidati.
We're not the only family who embarks on this labor intensive project.
Through the teleportation of instagram
I've witnessed the gathering of many who honor this custom.
Most fascinating, no two recipes are alike.
Passed from generation to generation, interpretations have occurred.
In fact, I have not found anyone whose cookies look like ours.
Many roll the dough into logs and slice before baking.
Others make deep cuts into the dough, and fan the rings to create a bracelet
which just happens to be what the word means.
And yet a sprinkling of multii color nonpareils have remained intact.
We adhere the sprinkles with egg wash,
others sacrilegiously glaze with royal icing.
Unskilled, Sarah and I rolled some lame looking crescents.
My mother had an Italian word for them
which I don't think is fit for print.

Chicks Rule

We  change the narrative
when we have women in positions of power.
We change the narrative
when stories about women are told and executed by women.
I love men.
I love how they are different from women.
I value them for their expertise,
but it's time for a shift.
Sometimes you have to over correct to find balance.

Call Me By Your Name

"We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster
that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty.
Before you know it, your heart is worn out."
