Twenty Eighteen

2017 will be remembered for the fragility of our democracy.

A year when white male entitlement and fear of progress put a man in office 

who is mentally unstable and unfit to govern.

We have been besieged with lies, greed and corruption.

The year started with womens' marches and the call to resist.

It ended with a sonic reckoning which is still reverberating. 

Wildfires, hurricanes and floods, heightened by climate change, had me on edge.

And yet, in the shadow of so much destruction and darkness

my personal life soared.

The kindest of men entered my life

and a project I love and believe in was green lit to series.

Producing in NY was a satiating adventure.

Turning the page on a new year, countless untold stories yet to unfold,

I walked on the water's edge with optimism and a full heart.

Happy 2018.

Ringing in Thirteen

Slammed into Christmas this year and got knocked on my ass.

Worked until late on Friday before the holiday.

Traveled back to LA on Saturday to sit in 

a frigid theater to see Hamilton.

Unpacked for days.

A dry hacking couch lodged in my lungs and took me down.

Had to cancel my New Year's Eve party

but still celebrated someone's thirteenth birthday.

Met Life

NYC in December is a like a sugar plum fairy's fantasy.

Wreaths and holiday lights brighten every crack and crevice.

Pine trees dusted with fresh snow stand guard at corner markets.

It's picture perfect, and feels like a warm holiday embrace in front of a roaring fire.

And yet I'm counting the days until I return to the warm Santa Ana winds

kicking up dust and ash in Southern California.

Hollywood offices shuttered on Friday for a two week pause,

but our production is still going full steam ahead for another week.

I will slam into Christmas,

and then carve out time for 

 a low winter sun hike reflecting on what was and what will be.

Until then I'm packing as much of NYC culture and cheer into my weekend as possible.
