The Great Believers

Surprised this book received so many rave reviews and accolades.
I'm weary of the overly used narrative device tracking two parallel stories
in different time periods which ultimately connect.
Listening to this book shined a light on the standard prose
belabored with he said this and he said that.
BUT to its credit the deep loss and unmitigated terror experienced by this group of friends living in the '80s during the AIDS epidemic profoundly affected me.
Sometimes the volume of stories told on a particular subject matter can desensitize me to the horror.
The global atrocity becomes a factual backdrop instead of a circumstance provoking emotion.
These characters' responses subverted previous portrayals and their stories have stayed with me.
