Wind Farm

The largest and oldest wind farm in the US is in Palm Springs,
at the San Gorgonio Pass, gateway to the Coachella Valley.
Winds speeds along this route can reach 80 mph,
only 5 miles faster than a category 1 hurricane.
The perfect environment for a field of 4,000 turbines
which produce enough energy to power Palm Springs and the entire valley.

Driving on the highway towards PS,
my first glimpse of the windmills rising from the desert floor
always makes me smile.
A swath of white mechanical arms marching in the wind.
From the mountain peaks they dot the landscape in symmetrically rows.
But up close, they take on a different persona.
A futuristic incarnation of Don Quiotes' enemies.
A low hum of the blades accompanies the silence.
The wind blows.
Walking amongst them is like entering another dimension
especially as the sun lowers casting dramatic shades of yellow and orange across the sky.

Murray Peak

Took a challenging hike this morning to Murray Peak.  Several years ago I hiked this mountain with a friend, and instead of going on a nine mile loop we got lost in the bottom of the canyon, crossed paths with a rattlesnake, ran out of water, and got chased off private property.  Several weeks ago I stumbled upon a different trail head to the peak, and this morning I set out for an adventure.  I hiked 8.57 miles in 3 hours and 11 minutes, burning 1259 calories while climbing over 3000 feet.  The temperature was perfect, weather conditions exceptional.  I'm dusty, and my feet are a little achy, but overall happy to have squeezed the last few hours out of this holiday before diving back into work and the unknown.

Tinto

I certainly don't need another reason to love Palm Springs, but if I did it would be Tinto.   Iron Chef and James Beard award winner Jose Garces has a new sophisticated restaurant in the Saguaro Hotel.   The experience was delightful and DELICIOUS.
