Picasso and #metoo

Re-evaluating art through the lens of #metoo.
This bold article in Art Net News steps out Hannah Gadsby's criticism of Picasso.
I am a feminist and yet my perspective is constantly shifting and being challenged on a deeper level.
We have been living in a white man's world and everything
 — stories, art, business, laws, relationships, beauty, fashion
has been funneled through this paradigm.
Even Trump's brand of conservatism can't stop the change.
Our eyes are open.  We will not be silenced.

Day 35

Beach Day

Another intense day of heat.
By noon, even the beach was too hot.
But the early morning hours were delightful.
Diffused light seeped through the clouds
as umbrellas multiplied on the coast line.
We walked.  I read.  He swam.
We called it a day as the brightness became unbearable
and I needed the refuge of shade.

Day 34

Record breaking temperatures seized Southern California.
Triple digits usually reserved for the desert swept the region.
Like a snow day, I found myself house bound grateful for the crisp air pumping from the vents.
Late at night the air was still thick with heat.
Ominous with a hint of natural disaster in its folds.

Won't You Be My Neighbor

When we love a person, we accept him or her exactly as is:
the lovely with the unlovely, the strong with the fearful,
the true mixed in with the facade
and of course, the only way we can do it is accepting ourselves that way.

Day 32

Hannah Gadsby

I think I have to quit comedy.
I built a career on self deprecating humor and I don't want to do that any more.
Do you understand what self-deprecation means
when it comes from someone who already exists in the margins?
It's not humility.  It's humiliation.
I put myself down in order to speak, in order to seek permission to speak,
and I simply will not do that anymore,
not to myself,
or anybody who identifies with me.

Sunday Ritual

Stone fruit, melon, Bub and Grandma's bread
Summer's bounty inspires relaxed meals
and the desire to unwind at home.
